Trust is earned. But we should give people a chance right away to prove that they can indeed be trusted. But what if? It's better to be safe than sorry. But what the heck--I want new true friends.
That is tough. My advice and my modus operandi is to be cautious. Only trust as much as you are willing to lose.
Think of it in money terms: if someone asks to borrow money, you might feel comfortable lending $2 or even $20, but might be uncomfortable lending $2000, because it is a loss that would be much harder to bear.
I am not saying my way is best. Sometimes I feel awful when people call me friend and I cannot reciprocate because it is too soon for me.
